A.Check previously learned skills, including stretching and raising the pulse - Review past basic skills that were learned
Cover prerequisite skills needed for the current training session
PRESENTATION
A.Provide a short statement of objectives (tell it)
Proceed in small steps, but at a rapid pace (show it)
Highlight main points
Provide demonstrations and models (demonstrate drill)
When necessary, give detailed and redundant instructions
GUIDED PRACTICE
A.Initial player practice takes place with coaches guidance
Questions are directly relevant to the content or skill
Coach checks for understanding by evaluating players response
Coach gives additional explanation, process feedback, or repeats explanation, where necessary
All players have a chance to respond and receive feedback: coach sees that all players participate
Prompts are provided during practice
Guided practice continues until all players are able to respond
Guided practice is continued until a success rate of 80% is achieved
CORRECTIVES AND FEEDBACK
A.Player errors indicate a need for more practice
Monitor players to prevent systematic errors
Corrections can include explaining or reviewing or re-teaching the last steps
Try to elicit an improved response when the first response is incorrect
Guided practice and corrections continue until the coach feels that the group can meet the objectives of the lesson
Praise should be used in moderation, and specific praise is more effective than general praise
INDEPENDENT PRACTICE
A.Practice is directly relevant to skills/content being taught
Practice is over-learning
Practice until responses are firm, quick and automatic
Ninety-five percent correct rate during independent practice
Players are held accountable for individual work
Actively supervise all players
REVIEW OF PRACTICE SESSION
A.Cool down
Review what was done
Assign individual work
Taken from a Lesson Plan in the Handbook of the American Educational Research Association.
When I was observing classroom teachers, I gave them a copy of the original lesson plan. They did not have to use it, but many did. With soccer coaching I made a few changes. I changed the word teacher to coach and student to player. Etc. It is a five-step plan:
1. Review
2. Presentation
3. Guided practice and correctives and feedback (a drill)
4. Independent practice (a game)
5. Review and cool down (assign individual work if practice is not done every day)
If the coach has a two-hour session, steps 2 and 3 can be run a second time. Then the game (step 4) should cover all that was learned that day.
